Blackthorne is a platform based shoot-em-up published by Blizzard Entertainment for the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis and PC. Blizzard actually has a long history of producing innovative and original games, even if all they do now is sell online multiplayer crack to anyone willing to cough up enough dough. It was originally released in 1994, but was re-released for the Game Boy Advance in 2002. It was then re-re-released by Blizzard on as a free download. Blackthorne looks fantastic. The colors are vivid, the character animations are fan-fucking-tastic and the cut scenes between levels are that 1980s-saturday-morning-cartoon kind of awesome.… Read the rest

Judge Dredd was developed by Probe Software, published by Acclaim and released in 1995 for the Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Game Gear and Game Boy. It was based on the film of the same name which in turn was based on the long running 2000AD series of comic books which featured Judge Dredd as its flag ship character. I love the comics, I actually quite liked the movie and I really enjoyed this game. I have to admit that I had no expectations of this game when I tried it out for the first time. If anything I was ready for the worst.… Read the rest

Download Yamamoto San is a side scrolling platformer from a freeware developer by the name of Yuzuru Yasuda . I think that might actually be his real name. The game has 16 levels in total, each offering plenty of platform jumping and baddie busting action. The first couple of levels are actually a kind of training mode which is entirely in Japanese, however anyone familiar with platform games should have zero trouble figuring out the basics. The production values of this particular freeware title are a cut above the rest, thankfully this doesn’t mean that the quality of the gameplay itself has been compromised in any way.… Read the rest

Wonder Boy III : The Dragon’s Trap is the third Wonder Boy game on the Sega Master System, following on from Wonder Boy in Monster Land. The game was created by West One studios, published by Sega in 1989 and was later ported to the Game Gear. Despite being created by a Japanese company, Wonder Boy III was first released in English on the Sega Master System in North America and Europe, before being ported to the PC Engine in Japan a few years later as an Adventure Island title. In fact, Wonder Boy III, in it’s original form, didn’t see a Japanese release until 2007 when it was bundled with the Sega Ages : Monster World Complete Collection for the Playstation 2.… Read the rest

Download Magic Jewelry is a puzzle based platformer from Japanese freeware game developer Manny. It features a little witch who has the ability to create magic boulders and place them in front of herself. The object of the game is to use her magic boulders to reach the gems that are sprinkled about each stage. The basic mechanics of the game are pretty simple and it doesn’t take very long at all to become proficient at magical boulder creation. On the surface, Magical Jewelry looks cute, what with the little witch girl running about collecting jewels and all. Don’t let that fool you though, this game does get quite difficult as you progress through the stages.… Read the rest

Download Golsef the Brave is a side-scrolling platformer by a Japanese freeware game creator who simply goes by the title “Woshida”. The game seems to be made with action editor 4, a common piece of game creation software that is responsible for the lions share of platformers available in the Japanese freeware scene. This particular title is a pretty good example of what to expect from titles made with specialized game-creation software. There is nothing truly amazing or ground breaking with Golsef the Brave, but everything works. The controls are responsive, the graphics are adequate and have a nice old school feel to them, the boss battles are challenging yet not overly difficult.… Read the rest

Wonderboy in Monster Land is the second installment in the Wonderboy franchise and the first game in the Monster Land series. This game is another example of Westone Studios playing Sega like a fool. Much like the first Wonder Boy game, the code for Monster Land was again sold to Hudson who released it as Bikkuriman World and changed the graphics and sprites to match the characters from an anime series of the same name. The game starts with Wonder Boy in nothing but a grass skirt. The girl he just risked his life to save in the last game seems to be gone as well.… Read the rest

Download Be My Sword starts out with a very professional looking title screen. From there we get a little bit of story. Basically some uppity bitch named Himeno tells you to be her sword so naturally you turn into a sword. I wish I was making this shit up.As it turns out, her big sister has been accused of being … responsible for a crime or something, and this girl that has just turned you into a sword simply must to do something about it. It didn’t take me long to figure out that the back story of the game designers idea of a joke.… Read the rest

Download For the first time in a very long time a game gave me a case of the “what the fuck?”s. Literally. I opened up this game and cried “what the fuuuuuck?” as soon as the gameplay started. My wife was all like “stop talking to your computer, you know it can’t hear you”, so I was all like “go make me a turkey pot pie!” and then she hit me up the back of the head. At any rate, the WTF meter really goes into the red with this little gem. First off, you will notice that it is very amateurish (is that even a word?) and looks like the all the in-game graphic s were done in MS paint, which they probably were.… Read the rest

Download Legend cave is a free RPG/platform hybrid from Japanese freeware developer Bombalmen. The game is completely in Japanese, however that shouldn’t stop anyone from enjoying it as there is virtually no dialog. It is not a story rich epic journey type RPG, but rather a ‘you VS everything’ survival type of game. The game opens to the developer’s logo and then straight into the main menu. First time players of course will want to start a new game, which is the first option on the screen In Legend Cave, you choose from one four character types, as well as their gender.… Read the rest
