Ahead Striker

Ahead Striker is a top-down freeware shooter with good enough production values and gameplay innovation to make it a cut above the rest of the countess number of freeware Japanese shooters. The game looks very nice and plays exceptionally smoothly, and even has a pumping soundtrack, but what really impressed me was the shooting itself. The player craft can shoot in three different directions; forward, backwards or from (both) sides. While it is a little fiddly to begin with, it made for an interesting and quite intense gaming session. There is a bomb attack available which is a little overpowered, but hey, sometimes it is nice to have the tables turned in your favor.… Read the rest

Mouse Shooting

Mouse Shooting is a super-simple space shooter in which the player space craft is controlled by the mouse. Movement is unrestricted by artificial lag or slow down, so you can dart about the player screen with the same speed you could move the cursor on your desktop to close that porn site when your wife walks into the room. The creator actually already uploaded a gameplay video, so I will link that here as it does a better job of showcasing the gameplay than my dictionary-through-a-blender approach to writing ever could. The American Delta Vengeance Action Blood Force Kill Commando

The American Delta Vengeance Action Blood Force Kill Commando is a freeware first person shooter with a very distinct Commodore 64 feel. Clearly the game is far to advanced for an actual Commodore 64 to play, but the new-retro graphics make it pretty clear what the developers were going for. The damn game tripped my anti-virus, and then once it was cleared by the antivirus (the game is safe) it would immediately crash upon starting. Even playing around with the compatibility settings made no difference. So while I can’t actually give any kind of review for this game, it, ah, looks kinda cool.… Read the rest

Tofu Adventure

Click here to download Tofu Adventure is a new-retro freeware platformer from Studio Byp. I think. I had a look at the documentation and it did give a few specific names, but the author’s homepage seems to be offline and there is no mention of this game on Studio Byp’s homepage either, which is weird, but at least the download still exists. Tofu, a traditional Japanese staple made from bean curd, comes in little white blocks, and the hero of the game has the same shape. Here in Japan it is still possible to find Tofu shops, normally run by and ancient little old lady, or sometimes a pleasant-to-the-point-of-being-creepy middle aged man with a huge, toothy smile.… Read the rest

Bandai releases printable character models

Relative Linkage In a move that absolutely no one saw coming, Bandai has teamed up with Brother (that company which makes printers and fax machines) to produce printable retro game character models which are available for download, for free, via their website. Simply rock on up to the site, click on the desired character, download the .pdf file, print it and swear a blue streak as you attempt to construct your character of choice. I haven’t tried any of them yet, but it seems legit enough. The downloads are only available until the 29th of June, BUT, if the total number of downloads exceeds 10,000, Bandai have promised to release a second set, so get out there and start cutting and pasting like a hungover collage student pouring over Wikipedia the morning their essay is due.… Read the rest

Zombie Shooting Lite

Download page The title says it all. Zombie Shooting. That’s literally the game. You stand in a room with a gun and shoot zombies. Have you ever played a game that failed to deliver? A game with a title that mislead or flat out lied to the player. Yeah? Well this game is the absolute opposite of that. There is no bullshit training mode to sit through, nor is there some third rate b-movie level plot. No hammy voice actors just reading straight from a script and hoping that their pay check will cover this months liqour bill. It really is nothing but shooting zombies.… Read the rest

Kaikan 壊漢

Download (scroll down to the bottom of the page) Kaikan is a freeware vertical shmup from Zakichi, the same mad mind behind Contlade. I would say, in my own humble, alcoholic opinion, that Kaikan is the superior of the two, even if Contlade is a lot of fun in its own right. While Contlade closely resembled an early console shooter, Kaikan closely resembles an arcade shooter. It’s fast, it’s hectic, it’s got shit flying everywhere and power-ups galore. It’s awesome. You start the game choosing a craft to pilot. Each craft has a different main attack and appearance. The appearance of the ship is completely arbitrary, but the main attack alters the gameplay significantly.… Read the rest

Colorful Shooting

Download (Click on the first link) This game has to be the ugliest thing I have ever seen. It looks like someone threw MS paint into a blender and poured the result onto a computer monitor. But, as it turns out, there is a very valid reason for the games gag-inducing color scheme. The background is made up of 3 colors, and enemy fire is also made up of those same colors. This means that if an enemy is firing red projectiles, you will not be able to see them when the fly over any red patches of background. Couple that with the fact that the background moves with the player, this title can make for a very intense gaming experience.… Read the rest

Hitotsu

Download Hitotsu is a freeware vertical shooter from the mad mind of Ryusui. The game was originally created for a contest in which participants create a game from scratch in under 48 hours. Knowing Ryusui, he probably finished the game in ten minutes and spent the rest of the time ripping out a guitar solo while pulling a wheelie on a motorcycle and simultaneously snorting coke of the back of a Japanese schoolgirl because fuck you he’s Ryusui and that’s how he rolls. He is also a prominent member of the ROM hacking and translation scene, and some of his handy work can be seen here.… Read the rest

Splash Festival

Splash Festival Download. Do you enjoy getting drunk on red wine and driving go-karts into things? Tired of getting arrested and being yelled at by your overbearing wife? Well, I have the solution we have both been searching for. Splash Festival is a freeware title by Okahara Mai, a student at the Kobe Institute of Computing’s department of game development (seriously, check out this link). Unlike the seemingly bottomless pit of vertical space shooters and sub-par platformers that make up so much of the Japanese freeware scene, Splash Festival is both unique and a hell of a lot of fun. In Splash Festival, you play a silhouette who rides a go cart around a square rink and smashes grapes with a mallet.… Read the rest
