PSA: Eschalon Book I released as freeware

I previously reviewed Eschalon: Book 1 here. To commemorate the 10th anniversary of Eschalon: Book I, Basilisk Games have decided to release the full version, for free, via their website, Steam, or Good Old Games. Click here for more details. For those who can’t be fucked reading my original review of the game, it is an old school, top down, single player indie RPG which really struck a chord with retro-gamers upon release. Now, 10 years later, it is available for free. I hadn’t played it for a while, so I re-downloaded the free version and gave it a spin. It works just flawlessly under Windows 10, but unfortunately cannot be made widescreen, so it retains it’s 4:3 aspect ratio.… Read the rest

ドラゴンクエスト Dragon Quest

Dragon Quest, or Dragon Warrior as it was known outside of Japan, is the first in a series of role playing games that really need no introduction. The game launched a legitimate phenomenon in Japan which continues on to this day. The game’s artwork being penned by Dragonball creator Akira Toriyama is the icing on the cake. But while this is all well and good, I recently realized that I have never actually played the very first instalment of the series. Partly due to not having a NES as a child (long live the Sega Master System). As I grew up and started getting my grubby hands on new systems, and even discovered the world of emulation, I still never got around to playing the game which started the Dragon Quest series.… Read the rest

Freeware: Hero Quest

Download (game home page) Hero Quest was a popular board game released back in the 90s. Essentially Dungeons and Dragons with training wheels, it was a roleplaying game. It was incredibly straight forward, there were only four characters to choose from each with simple yet varying stats and abilities. The actual game itself is more like a board-game incarnation of Diablo. The game is meant to be played with at least two players; one person is assigned the dungeon master and the other chooses a hero to play as. The board game was a hell of a lot of fun, and was a great roleplaying experience for those that didn’t have the patience for D&D.… Read the rest

Freeware: Magical Jewelry ~メルーの冒険~

Download Magic Jewelry is a puzzle based platformer from Japanese freeware game developer Manny. It features a little witch who has the ability to create magic boulders and place them in front of herself. The object of the game is to use her magic boulders to reach the gems that are sprinkled about each stage. The basic mechanics of the game are pretty simple and it doesn’t take very long at all to become proficient at magical boulder creation. On the surface, Magical Jewelry looks cute, what with the little witch girl running about collecting jewels and all. Don’t let that fool you though, this game does get quite difficult as you progress through the stages.… Read the rest

Freeware: 勇者ゴルセフ Golsef the Brave

Download Golsef the Brave is a side-scrolling platformer by a Japanese freeware game creator who simply goes by the title “Woshida”. The game seems to be made with action editor 4, a common piece of game creation software that is responsible for the lions share of platformers available in the Japanese freeware scene. This particular title is a pretty good example of what to expect from titles made with specialized game-creation software. There is nothing truly amazing or ground breaking with Golsef the Brave, but everything works. The controls are responsive, the graphics are adequate and have a nice old school feel to them, the boss battles are challenging yet not overly difficult.… Read the rest

漆黒のトラペゾヘドロン~The Trapezohedron of the darkness~

Download I stumbled upon this game the other day and was impressed by its smooth animation and solid gameplay. Trapezohedron is a 3D vertical shooter by indie developer EAXREG, however much like that newest installment of Raiden, it retains the mechanics of a 2D shooter. Trapezohedron, according to the internet is: the dual polyhedron of an n-gonal antiprism. Its 2n faces are congruent kites (also called trapezia in the US, trapezoids in Britain, or deltoids). The faces are symmetrically staggered. I hope that clears up any confusions you may have had. The back ground moves all over the place (I think I almost got motion sickness at one point) and looks great.… Read the rest

Rolling Hamster Kids ころくるハムスターキッズ

Download Have you ever wanted to see four hamsters body slamming the shit out of each other and roll into fences? Of course you have, and this is your chance. Rolling Hamster Kids is so much fun it hurts. You start the game choosing what kind of game mode you want. You can choose a one on one battle right through to a four player free for all. The game can be played with four friends and can also be played over a network. I haven’t tested it though, as my two best friends Jack Daniels and Johnny Walker weren’t interested.… Read the rest

Destruction Desire

Download This game is freaking awesome. It’s a 2D fighter, similar to Guilty Gear, which seems to have been made with some kind of fighting game making kit. The graphics in this game are fan-fucking-tastic and fluid as hell. It really is a nicely polished piece of work. Unfortunately the creator has given up on the game making business (according to his website) which is a shame, but it can’t be helped. The game isn’t exactly new on the freeware scene and I wouldn’t be surprised if a few die hard Otaku out there have already played it, but whatever. I like this game so I’m gonna review it.… Read the rest

Nezumi Man

Download Nezumi means Mouse and Man means Man. That’s pretty much all you need to know about this games mascot. Starting the game up I find that the game window doesn’t quite fit in my laptops screen. Oh well. As soon as it starts I know what I’m in for; a Megaman clone. The level select screen is the same, the controls are the same, the attack is the same (only you can’t do a charge shot for some stupid reason). Despite this, after a few minutes of play time you do somewhat forget that it’s a blatant rip-off. Well allmost.… Read the rest

Wonderboy was first released as an arcade game in 1986 and was later ported to the Sega Master System and Sega Game Gear. It featured a young man in a grass skirt taking down defenceless animals with a tomahawk and jumping skateboards over ice caverns. Needless to say this game blew me away as a small child. Wonderboy eventually found it’s way from the arcade to the living room via the Sega Master System and is considered to be a classic by most Master System fans. Any NES fans who play Wonderboy for the first time are bound to get a strange feeling of deja-vu.… Read the rest
