I stumbled upon this game the other day and was impressed by its smooth animation and solid gameplay. Trapezohedron is a 3D vertical shooter by indie developer EAXREG, however much like that newest installment of Raiden, it retains the mechanics of a 2D shooter. Trapezohedron, according to the internet is:
I hope that clears up any confusions you may have had.
The back ground moves all over the place (I think I almost got motion sickness at one point) and looks great. You really get the feeling you are moving through another world. One problem is that because of the 3D effects, enemys often fly in from your end of the screen, underneath you. While they can’t hit you and don’t fire while they are flying under you, my first reaction is to get the hell out of the way anyways. I did get used to it though.
The controls arenice and fluid, just how I like ‘em.You have your usual attack, some kind of blue pulse laser thingy, and a mega bomb type attack which you only have one of. The thing that I thought made this shooter stand out is that it has this kind of warp speed mode that you can use in short bursts, which comes in handy when you find yourself in a pinch. What is even more awesome is that the warp leaves behind a trail, and if you warp in a circle, the trail forms a loop which stays on the screen for a while and causes damage to anything that touches. This “loop trail” attack is actually quite useful, especially when fighting the bosses. One thing that was a little bit of a let down is that there are no power-ups, and no extra bombs to collect. You do however get unlimited continues, so the real challenge will be the high scores, and your score returns to zero every time you continue.
This game is in Japanese, but for whatever reason the main menu is in English with Japanese subtitles. Maybe they are trying to appeal to the English speaking market? Who knows. It’s not like there is much text in the game besides the title screen ayways. But whatever, if it makes the game more accessable then I guess it’s a good thing.
The game itself is actually quite short, and thanks to the unlimited continues, can easily be completed in one sitting. The final boss comes back 4 times though, an each time he fired more shit all over the screen. Seriously it was ridiculous.
